3 Crucial Things Self-Employed People Forget…

The picture is of a man on his laptop to represent someone being self-employed

We get it.

There are a million things to consider as a self-employed person. To make life easier, here are 3 crucial things not to forget…

The three crucial things most self-employed people forget!

1. Boundaries

Despite being their own bosses, self-employed people probably have the worst work-life balance there is. What starts off as “This crazy work schedule is just why I get started”, soon turns into your entire working life.

How to set better boundaries when you’re self-employed:

  • Take one task at a time

Multitasking can feel like you’ve found the loophole to having a never-ending to-do list but it’s actually the opposite. It often means nothing gets fully finished, or if it does, it’s not done to your usual standard. It can leave you feeling like you’re drowning, rather than accomplished for ticking something properly off your list.

  • Don’t be fooled by your inbox

Your inbox can quickly become your most unproductive task – Having it always open/available is a constant distraction that pulls you from the task in hand. It makes multitasking even easier to do and sets unhealthy boundaries with your clients from the off where they expect immediate responses.

  • Have set hours

Do this from day one. It’s all too easy to work late into the night, get up early and work weekends. That isn’t sustainable though and you’ll likely burn out.

  • Take breaks

Whether it’s to have a cup of tea, your lunch, a walk or to do nothing, breaks allow the brain a rest. Then, when you are working, you’ll be much more productive.

2. You don’t have to do it all

When you’re self-employed, it can be too easy to take on every job role within your business. This is not a good plan. It makes you very busy without actually achieving anything.

Professions that can support your business so you can concentrate on growing:

  • Accountant
  • Financial planner
  • Marketer
  • Virtual assistant
  • Business coach

All of these professions can take work off your plate and support your growth without you having to do it all.

3. Future planning

When you’re in the thick of self-employment, you can be so busy working on the day to day that you aren’t able to put time aside to plan for the future. It can feel so far away that you may not even consider pensions, retirement, investments, etc.

However, future planning couldn’t be more important. Especially if you want healthy boundaries and a good work-life balance like we talked about.
